Camp Nanowrimo is tomorrow!

Oh.  My.  Gosh!

CAMP NANOWRIMO STARTS TOMORROW!!!

For those who don’t know what that is, it’s a writing contest, the goal of which is to write the first draft of a book.  In the case of Nanowirmo (November), it is strictly a novel/novella writing contest in which the word goal is 50, 000 words.  In the case of Camp Nanowrimo, it is a book/story writing contest in which writers can set their own word goals.  My personal word goal is the typical 50, 000 words

For those who haven’t signed up yet, here’s a link: http://campnanowrimo.org/

I have just been assigned my cabin – I am with 12 other lovely writers, and some of them are . . . chatty!  I think this will be a very encouraging bunch.

For those who are thinking of signing up, here’s a list of things you need:

1) Writing material (computer, pencil, pen, paper, keyboard, crayons, post-it notes, notebooks, spray paint . . . whatever medium you prefer).

2) Coffee.  If you haven’t started drinking it yet, you will.

3) A smile and a positive attitude.

4)  It helps to have encouraging friends.  You can find those @Nanowrimo on Twitter, in the forums, and, of course, by messaging me.  Youtubers give a lot of encouragement as well.  I find Katytastic’s, Little Book Owl’s and Christine Horner’s videos particularly helpful.

5) Story ideas.  Don’t worry, these will come to you.  I find it best to have an outline, but some have “pantsed” Nanowrimo and won.

See you all soon!

Aleksandra

Speechless?

That’s right, folks (if there are any folks out there reading this), I don’t have ideas for a blog post today so I’m blogging for the sake of blogging about not knowing what to blog about.

So, here’s some ideas of what I could be blogging about:

1) astrophysics – I don’t know much about it but I sure love to watch SciShowSpace (yes, I did just shamelessly plug one of the vlogbrothers’ latest channels).  Also, black holes, quasars and other such phenomenon are awesome

2) the economy of Luxembourg – all I can say on this subject is that they are an EU member country

3) the eating habits of the cricetinae (hamster) – strange

4) the effect of climate change on the Arctic – I’m sure it’s dire

5) trends in recent New York Times bestseller lists – let me guess?  Teen paranormal romance?

Speaking of YA books that feature the paranormal, it’s time to give you another spoiler from my own book, which is not a romance, but is a young adult book that does feature the paranormal on account of being a fantasy novel.

Your spoiler for today: the fantasy world it takes place in, the Land of Legends and Ancient Songs, is influenced by Middle Earth, Narnia, and Disneyland.  The book itself is full of references to literature, folk music, and pop culture, including Skyrim.  “The Rocky Road to Dublin” is one of Andrzej’s favourite songs to play on guitar, and he has a whole tavern dancing to it.  Don’t know “The Rocky Road to Dublin”?  SHAME ON YOU!!!!  Enlighten yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxBKgOyMzSc

Your speechless,

Aleksandra

PS. I was wrong about 5) – it seems that MYSTERIES are all the rage this week: http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/overview.html!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE WHO WON CAMP NANOWRIMO 2014!!!

An Epic Cover and purplemousetwee(ts)

Hello!

Big news today!  Purplemouse now has a twitter page (@purplemousetwee – which should have been @purplemousetweets but they didn’t give me the last “ts” – too many letters :P)  You can follow me there and keep track of my story progress and writing news!

Today I’m previewing the cover of my story – An Epic Story.  The cover is purposefully not quite epic.  Here you go:

Image

This image was made with MS Paint.  The little stick figure is, of course, our hero Roland Delacroix.  The inspiration behind this: I imagined how Roland himself would draw his adventures.  The sword is misleading: “He is the tenth worst swordsman alive” (Gieralt 100) (it feels SO good to cite myself in MLA, especially with the number “100” beside my name)!  But he does not get discouraged!

Furthermore, I like the contradiction of the title – An Epic Story – with a less-than-epic cover.

I realize that this cover, especially the text, will need quite a bit of modification.  I’m also considering adding the other characters into the background, also as stick figures.

Hope you guys like it!

Your artistic,

Aleksandra
